Art for the dog-minded

SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (1802-1873) is perhaps the best—and certainly the best known—painter who made his living painting the animals of the privileged. Landseer’s ability to capture the grace and beauty of his patrons’ dogs made him so famous and successful that a variety of Newfoundland—the black-and-white Landseer—bears his name.

Landseer works fetch top dollars at art auctions, and they are highly sought after by art collectors and dog lovers alike.

Another interesting tidbit about Sir Edwin: the popular image of a Saint Bernard with a cask hanging from the collar comes not from real life, but from a Landseer painting. This image became so ingrained into the culture that some people started adorning their dogs with casks for special occasions.
